YCF Scholarship to Retrain and Retain Monongalia County Workforce

June 2, 2022

Morgantown, WV — Monongalia County workers whose jobs were eliminated or hours reduced since March 2020 are eligible for the Monongalia County Adult Workforce Retraining Scholarship, which offers scholarships for trade, technical, and certificate programs for individuals who had significant work disruptions while employed in Monongalia County.

The scholarship, offered through Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia, Inc. (YCF), helps recipients cover education and related expenses as they train for a new career or improve on existing skills.

The goal of the scholarship is to help people recover from job loss or reduced income, while also expanding the recipients’ career goals and objectives. Award recipients will be able to use the funding to pay for tuition, books, lab fees, tools, certification fees and other mandatory fees.

“On behalf of the YCF Board of Directors, we would like to thank the anonymous donor for their charitable support to help individuals remain in our community and continue with meaningful careers,” said Patty Showers Ryan, President of YCF.  She noted that over 2,000 workers in Mon County, from large to small organizations, have experienced work disruptions since March 2020.

“Over the past two years, employees of several large companies including Mylan and the former Blacksville No. 2 mine have experienced job loss. In addition, many working in restaurants, retail and other service industry positions were hit hard. These educational dollars are for them,” Ryan added.

Successful applicants will be able to show evidence of previously working in Monongalia County, regardless of their county of residence. They must show a job loss or reduction in pay anytime from March 2020 to present.

The scholarship awards will be paid directly to the respective educational institute. Additional educational expenses will be considered with payment directly to the vendor when possible.

Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. For details, visit http://ycfwv.org/monongalia-county-adult-workforce-retraining-scholarship/
